HERETICâS FORK : âNeanderthal Balletâ CD â05 (Private, US) Youâve got to understand something, ok? Youâve got to try to get your head around what Iâm talking about here. See, youâve got music that is hard. Itâs got loud guitar, it may even be on the radio. Say thereâs some guy who sounds angry, yelling or whatever. Then youâve got music that is harder. It may be even what youâd call heavy. Sure, itâs loud, dark and itâs got soul. It takes you by surprise, wrings the breath out of you and letâs you see something possibly a little uglier than you may have bargained for. And then, yes then, beyond that, you have music that is even heavier. You have those rare things that suddenly loom over you, maybe dredged up from a dream, a nightmare, and do disturbing, very powerful things to your psyche. They wait until the hand of God comes down, the Grand Leveler, punishing all in itâs path and then they level that...and do it with the kind of spectral voice and mystical aplomb that cause the very keystone of the universe to tremble in their presence. And, with that, they command you to dance this âNeanderthal Ballet.â For this is the music of the very axis of the universe, as it turns in itâs slow, painful reverie. Yes, this is the music I hear, in my head late at night. This is the music that I want to hear, that I long to witness. And, a band from Rhode Island, HERETICâS FORK have tapped into it here and unleashed it over the course of 11 monstrous cuts. It could be the crushing, morbid doom chords of the tracks early on like âEaterâ or âPatricide.â It could be the plaintive, yet jazz-like phrasing of the mellow guitars in âAppetite,â before they swell under mountains of amplification to smash your skull. It could be the melodies of the wonderful solo near the end of âThin The Herd.â And what of the spiraling outward into the eccentricities of the latter part of the album? The bizarre-yet-leaden aspects of âBlack-Haired Fathersâ/âFather-Daughter Dance,â and the stunning closing triarchy of âSoured Flesh,â âTFHâ & the understated-yet-haunting âOle Milky.â This music, this album created by HERETICâS FORK (Adam: vox/keys, Mark: bass, Ed: guitar/keys (this guy is a monster), Dave: drums, dij, djembe) is surely âheavyâ in terms of sound alone. Anyone into things like the early Sab-4, Vitus & Hairy Chapter will understand that. Yet the heaviness of atmosphere, depth and soul that this band has captured on this awesome disc goes far beyond what most rock or metal musicians will ever imagine. Absolutely staggering.
