Ernest Were Featured the Strummer 6 Magazine. (Writen By Carl Zeiss)www.strummermag.co.uk
Not Routine or Part of the Machine
Whilst the Arctic Monkeys and The Kaiser Chiefs have been
basking in their flavour of the month status, Ernest have
been busy gigging, writing and modestly becoming the
most talked about new band in the country. We spoke to
them briefly, watched them play and in the immortal words
of Neil Young were âblown awayâ.
Letâs be honest we go to gigs all the time that are âokâ. Youâll say âyeh they were
goodâ when what you really meant was âaverageâ. It takes something special to
make the spirit soar, make you forget about lifeâs trivialities for a while. A band that
doesnât follow fashion or cling onto the coat tails of the latest fad. Most of all a
band with passion, truly believing in what they do, the special chemistry thatâs
come from somewhere. Who knows where? Iâm sure Ernest donât. Thatâs the beauty
of a great band. Not being formulaic, just doing what you believe in.
I donât know Ernest. Not even their names (yes i got a demo and spoke to them via
email and the singer/guitarist at the gig), but the important thing is that I âfoundâ
Ernest. No hype, no PR, they just appeared on an unsigned bill in Manchester
and left everyone in the the venue gobsmacked. You may have guessed by
now that Iâm avoiding a description of Ernestâs sound. Well, itâs pretty
indescribeable. Unpigeonholable even! Suffice to say that âRoutineâ and
âPreggieâ are already in my âmost played songs everâ category.
Now that weâve told you itâs hard to put an anchor on Ernestâs sound,
âRoutineâ reminds me of Mansun at their sublime best. âPreggieâsâ structure lends itself to Radiohead circa OK Computer and the grandoise instrumental opener had more than a nod to Floyd. Conversely, the subject matter veers from the down to earth âpram pushing, cig box crushingâ âPreggieâ to the spaced out randomness of 'Growser'. Throw in a huge slice of funk âPuppiesâ (Single out exclusively from June 19th as a double aside with âPreggieâ) and you have an âattemptâ at permeating the Ernest enigma.
Signed to thier own label Sonic Vista recordings,
other than the single the only material available is the first 5 track ep â(Pimps, B**ches) and
Superheroesâ which you can buy at www.ernestnet.com.âPuppiesâ,
âRoutineâ and âPreggieâ can be sampled
at myspace.com/ernestband.
Gigwise they finished off
a tour at The
Roadhouse, Manchester
on May 30th. Check the
website for updates.
