11 MP3 Songs
JAZZ: Jazz Vocals, EASY LISTENING: Mood Music
Details:
Ethel has been a recording artist for such major labels as Capitol, Atlantic, RCA, and BASF. She was a mainstay on the Arthur Godfrey television show and has performed around the world. She most recently appeared headlining at the Jazz at Lincoln Center Allen Room, New York cityâs premier jazz venue.
Ethel keeps her home base in Baltimore. Her fellow Baltimorean, Billie Holiday, noticed the young singer and praised her unique style as a singer who is the real thing and doesnât fake. Frank Sinatra labeled her âmy kind of singerâ and Ella Fitzgerald has called her âthe best singer of her generation.â
This CD celebrates Ethelâs first major recording in over 14 years. It consists of 11 jazz standard and contemporary songs in an exquisite chamber music style that highlights the musicality and phrasing that has made Ethel one of the luminary singers of our time.
Ethel is accompanied by jazz master musicians Marc Copland and Stefan Scaggiari trading off on piano, Drew Gress on bass, and Paul Hildner on drums. Ethel shows her versatility and brilliance by accompanying herself on piano for the much loved hit âSomething Cool.â
In the New York Times, reviewer James Gavin states, ââ¦(Ethel) has barely recorded since leaving RCA. But as the best tracks of this new album show, this singer has grown into one of the most hypnotic vocalists in her field.â
Jazziz magazine states, âWith a deeply resonant voice thatâs shaded in subtle colorings and sweetly lethargic meters, Ennis sounds polished and poised throughout each ballad.â
The New York Daily News says, â..the former Capitol and RCA recording artist still makes you think, âOh say can she sing!â.â
The Christian Science Monitor describes Ethel this way: âHer voice has the tender confidence that makes you stop and pay attention to the styling youâd ignore in other singersâ¦.Cozy listening.â
