Details:
Evolution Rainbow gets up in societyâs grill with its art-damaged blend of dance-grind and goth-stained post-post-post-punk.

The Former Gender EP is a preview to the bandâs upcoming and as-yet-untitled, debut full-length, which is slated for a late-2006 release.

Fully charged with punk rockâs anarchic spirit, but with both eyes fixed firmly on the dance floor and tongue planted deeply in cheek, this shit-starting, San Francisco-based duo is challenging tired notions of gender and beauty, and offering up its two-cents on the politics of sexual identity.

On bass, synth and computers is Marc Kate, whom dance floor citizens in the Bay Area may recognize by his DJ name, Silencefiction. A founding former member of the critically lauded electronic avant-pop group I Am Spoonbender, Kate engineers the harsh, angular rhythms that serve as Evolution Rainbowâs foundation.

Guitarist/vocalist Vinsantos provides the feedback-drenched noise and processed shrieks. Having clawed his way out of San Franciscoâs morally bankrupt drag scene, the legendary front-freak for Bay Area bands Agness and A Sixthe Toe now draws inspiration from the comedic tragedies being staged nightly in the seedy backrooms of dimly lit bars.

As for his musical influences, Vinsantos hesitates to name any names. âThereâs definitely a goth-damaged sensibility to [Evolution Rainbow],â he explains. âBut weâve extracted gothâs camp sense and done away with all of the self-seriousness.â

Kate, on the other hand, gladly divulges his current musical crushes. Though he challenges listeners to find the dots (much less connect them) that link Evolution Rainbow with any of the bands currently occupying a slot in his CD changer.

âAll Iâve been listening to lately is minimal techno, Bauhaus and Led Zeppelin,â he says. âThe only similarity to Evolution Rainbow I can find is maybe the approach, and the focus on presentation.â

Evolution Rainbowâs mystique and cheeky musings on morning-after glamour, sexual politics, leather daddies and fashion tragedies are a social satire, a critique of the very worlds in which Vinsantos and Kate revel, and the circles in which they run.

âSometimes thereâs a fine line between mockery and a warm embrace.â Kate adds.

And the duoâs confrontational, Punch-and-Judy-like live shows are something fabulously fierce to beholdâ¦even from the relative safety of the bleachers.
