Details:
Evinrude make engines for motorboats; The Evinrudes make music best enjoyed while floating on a boat anchored off a Louisiana bayou. Here is a band whose literate take on the complexities of human relationships touch the soul, assisted, it must be said, by the familial air induced by the similarities between Shirley Cothran's voice and that of Sheryl Crow. Where Crow is strident and empowered however, Cothran is damaged but hopeful, with an ear for grim detail while Brian Reed's guitars float in zero gravity. The crushingly vivid wordplay ("Fat boy is out mowing the lawn, sweating like a side of rancid beef") is worthy of being pressed into service as the screenplay for the next David Lynch movie, while their gentle country-rock stylings give the lie to the notion that this is a dead scene.

Following up the success of last years critically acclaimed album
'Somebody has to be Pat Boone' which was described by the Sunday Times as
'smart, sassy guitar pop - unreservedly recommended' ***
Little Red Stars continues in very much in the same vein - Slyly insightful, undeniably catchy numbers like 'Sunfish' & 'Good Humour Man'- written like all of the album's songs by guitarist Brian Reed, wed barbed, biting wordplay, unshakably infectious choruses, and a jangly-to-jagged sonic punch. Reed's impressive compositions find a riveting voice in charismatic frontwoman Sherry Cothran, whose honey-coated vocals and magnetic stage presence effortlessly embody the edgy insights and universal contradictions inherent in Reed's provocative lyrics.

While The Evinrudes' double-edged songcraft will be greeted with a where-has-this-band-been-all-my-life sense of discovery by many listeners, the band's uncompromising lyrical vision and aggressive rock sound will already be familiar to the sizable regional following that the group has already amassed through tireless touring and a pair of well-received independent releases. Cothran and Reed, who are longstanding musical partners, bring divergent yet complementary backgrounds to their prolific working relationship.
