Al Tanner was born 1930, In San Antonio, Texas. From a musical family of pianists, he got his start at a neighbor's house where he learned to play Blues and Jazz. He played saxophone in his early years In 1953 Al moved to Oakland, California, where he still resides.
In 55 years in the bay area Al immersed himself in Jazz study of the masters such as Horace Silver, Art Blakey and
John Coltrane. From this he developed a musical training manual for the study of Jazz theory as well as many, many community efforts to educate outside the school systems with after school recreation center big bands and combos Defermery Park, Mosswood Park, and as a Jazz Icon Al Tanner has played in all the now defunct Jazz clubs such as Mr majors, Maxine's, Ivy's, Backyard and East Bay jazz clubs.
