About Canât Afford to Die:
Inspired by the line: money doesnât talk, it swears
Contains the line: money doesnât trickle down to the needy, it just goes round and round, among the greedy
About Song for Dylan (Ode to the Bard)
Thereâs a childrenâs story out of England called The Truthful Harp in which a hapless king named Fleudder Flam wants nothing more than to travel as a wandering bard, so he leaves his kingdom and seeks out the Chief bard at Caer Dathyl. When questioned by the Chief to see if he is worthy, everything he learned flies out of his head, and he makes a folly of it. The Chief takes pity on him and gives him a magical harp and sends him on his way. And so the story goes onâ¦he ends up doing great deeds but lying about them, and in the end the magical harp teaches him not to stretch the truth. I got to thinking about bards, and I doubted if there ever was a truer bard than Bob Dylan. This song is my tribute to him.
About Stay
Itâs a love song
About Lovesick Blues
Itâs a love song of a different kind, almost a joke
About Music Man
The first song I ever wrote, faced with choices, full of longing
About The Best Thing
A comment about the best things to dream about, the best kind of days, the best things to do, to say, to hear
About Ballad of the Moon and Stars
When faced with hopelessness and despair, one choice is to ride out your destiny and see where it leads
About Movinâ On
Been around cheaters, liars, idiots who think they're geniuses, and just plain fools in my days. Time to move on, and get the hell out of Dodge, if only in my mind.
About North Country Dream
Iâve spent a lot of time in the summers in northern Michigan, since I was born, and the memories are stark and woven into many layers now. The land there once belonged to the Ojibway and Chippewa Indians, and their heritage lives on in the hearts and minds of many people. I couldnât write about this great land without honoring the native Americans there.
About Restless Journey:
Well weâre all on a journey through life and ultimate death in one way or another; mine is a restless one, both real and imaginary; I would want to go to the edge of the earth if it existed, like they imagined it did once, and see the sunrise there; or go back to see the Garden of Eden, and behold its beauty as it was described in the scriptures; or sail out of Barcelona into the sunset; or go to the Grand Canyon, just to feel at peace; and I donât want to be afraid to stray off the beaten path, take the road less traveled, meet the farmer in the dell, meet the wise ones of old; learn their wisdom, enrich my life, learn how to be true to myself until the day I die; take time to enjoy simple pleasures like watching a train roll out of sight, hearing a drum beat simple but strong, seeing a rainbow up in the sky, catching a moonbeam in my hand, spending time with an old friend; and my heart tells me to be happy; feel my loverâs breath on my neck, capture his smile, have the power to make his soul sing, his spirits fly, tremble when I hear his rap upon my door; I also want to make a difference; do some good like stop man from killing, perhaps send the president to the police to atone for his crimes, bring someone like John Lennon back to life, get to the bottom of the Kennedy assassination; Iâd like to get to a point where I finally have it all and be content not to want any more; and the driving forces in my life and in my imagination still keep the journey turninâ, keep it rollinâ on
