And even doing something different, just for the sake of doing something different can help a person grow. Those are the reasons behind Roadside Attractionâs new CD, âA Nut Unbrokenâ
âThis is not a CD about problems,â says Phil Johnson, leader of Roadside Attraction. âThis is a CD about looking back on problems and realizing how minor they really were.â In âDead City Support Clubâ, Phil describes the trial every artist has gone through: an empty room. But then the triumph of everyone involved with the show (from the bartenders to the band) enjoying the show because theyâre doing what they love, regardless of lack of audience. âBlue Collar Anthemâ speaks to the loss of hope, even to the point that your favorite songs canât cheer you up anymore. âDo It Againâ, written for the film âStupid Cupidâ describes the perils of a first date when nothing goes right, but the hope that she might still consider a second date. âZing Zingâ is pure celebration, the overcoming of all the trials with a bouncy groove.
âA Nut Unbrokenâ is a distinct departure from Roadside Attractionâs past material. The title comes from the fact that when many people hear the groupâs material they tell them theyâre nuts and often think theyâre a little âbrokenâ. On this CD, theyâve become unbroken just long enough to deliver a collection of earnest, sincere songs about the human condition. They draw influence from artists that can find three sides on a two sided fence and work on all of them. The versatility of Prince. The respect for tradition and love for innovation and experimentation of Walt Disney. The melodies, of Bob Marley, as well as his ability to switch from sweet and happy to serious and thoughtful also contributed. All of these went into the craft of âA Nut Unbrokenâ.
An incurable sense of optimism runs through the music of Roadside Attraction whether itâs loud and wacky, or quiet and introspective. âA Nut Unbrokenâ being the latter. Lifeâs trials have an ending. Make it a good one, and you too can become A Nut Unbroken.
