The story of Carton is one that is also the story of Laco Deczi himself. Laco, from the Czech Republic is a jazz legend in his country. He struggled for years under the reign of Communism in the old Czechoslovakia. Forced to play music he did not like. With no freedom to write compositions that mattered to him. And yet through all of this he became very famous there. And as time passed even the Politburo loved him.
But Laco had bigger plans for himself and his music. So in 1984 he bravely escaped the iron fist that had engulged Eastern Europe for so many years and came to the United States.
His career has skyrockted and now Laco is a household word in his home country. Our good fortune too!
The songs of Carton are just some of the numerous compositions about a man and his most challenging life.
The singing lines of trumpet (Laco Deczi) and piano (Eric Meridiano) can be heard throughout this project. The bass provided by Japanese Superstar Nob Kinukawa is mircaculous in how it moves through the music. And Laco's own son, Vaico, gives us a lesson in what a jazz drummer should sound like. He is ''like a clock''.
Life is always about choices. Fortunate are those who choose to listen to the Songs of Laco Dezi and Celula New York.
