Chapter 1
Two Minds Defining Trances
Editor's Notes: Chapters One and Two represent the foundation of
this training. In Chapter One, the trainers present didactic
information interspersed with hypnotic language. (The hypnotic
language is italicized in the text for the ease of the reader.) The
intention throughout this chapter is to pace and lead the group
into trance without doing an overt trance induction. The trainers
are calibrating to the development of trance and group rapport.
The left-brain information in this chapter represents the trainers' model of
understanding which will be the basis of the training. The nature of the conscious
and unconscious minds is discussed along with trance and hypnosis. Erickson's
definition of the hypnotic state is included. This information is presented for at
least two reasons. The first is for the value of the information itself. The second
reason is to expand upon the participants' knowledge base so they can easily
"step into" the therapeutic models being discussed. The trainers unfold this
information as they calibrate to the audience's participation in the frames and
presuppositions which the trainers are setting.
Since one of the major purposes of this chapter is preframing, no overt
inductions, demonstrations, or exercises are included. This chapter ends with a
brief question-and-answer segment.
We want to formally welcome you to Training Trances, a training in trance.
This book is based upon information which we've synthesized from our
knowledge of Neuro -Linguistic Programming and the work of Dr. Milton H.
Erickson. Although there are techniques in this book which one can find
elsewhere, our experience has taught us that it is the spirit and the personality of
the practitioner which brings the techniques to life. Each person brings their own
unique understanding to an approach or a set of techniques. What follows is ours.
So hopefully you'll have an opportunity to experience trance in a whole new way
by the end of the first reading if not sooner. . . not that we're going to begin
making suggestions just yet, because it's more important at this point that you it
must do every job itself rather than trusting the unconscious mind and letring it
do the job for which it was designed. If the crew need the Captain's attention,
they can call the Captain: otherwise a good Captain will trust the crew members
to do their jobs. When there is mutual respect and understanding of their separate
functions, they multiply their strengths and insure smooth sailing.
