Details:
David Gerard has been writing and performing
music for nearly twenty years now, and counts
artists as diverse as John Cage and Jaco
Pastorius as mentors. He met and established
a dialogue with both artists during the 80's,
when he was living in New York City. While
studying at the School Of Visual Arts, Gerard
dropped out when he realized he was spending
more time studying art than actually persuing
it. He took a hiatus from creating - almost
eight years, in fact. It wasn't until he went
to a concert at Town Hall (where Cage was in
attendance,) that he re-connected to his true
calling. During intermission, he was intro-
duced to Cage, and a dialogue was born. Years
later, at the Tribeca Five and Dime, Gerard
would meet his second creative catalyst. Jaco
Pastorius was performing that evening, and
Gerard was given an introduction by none other
than Joni Mitchell. "Jaco, more than anyone
else" says Gerard, "gave me the impetus to
really listen to my inner voice. He taught me
that the biggest mistake is to let other
people restrict you creatively, and not to be
afraid if some people don't get it." Thus,
Gerard began first by abstract painting in
watercolor, and then eventually, he began
writing music. During that time, he created
works like the ambitious "A Piece Of The
Desert" which he performed at the Knitting
Factory (becoming one of the last unsigned
and unrepresented artists to perform there,)
and incorporated music into his spoken-word
performances at St.Marks Poetry Project and
artist space ABC No Rio on the Lower East
Side. While this album was written and re-
corded in roughly two year's time, this debut
is the culmination of a lifetime of making
and recording music, and reflects an artist
whose work is ever-evolving. Whether paying
homage to folks like John Cage and Philip
Glass (as on the clever juxtaposition, "In
A Glass Cage") or inventing his own expan-
sive soundscapes (like the haunting "The
Engineering Index" and the atmospheric
"Ephemeris",) "Compositions" will continue
to engage you with each successive listen.
