The New York City trio known as The Dark Horses sound more a product of Austins eclectic musical inclinations, where regular sojourns into late 60s-early 70s So-Cal country also come as naturally as ordering another Lone Star beer. And, as they frequently utilize their sidemen, Erik Kristiansen on acoustic guitar and Jon Graboff, whose pedal-steel work is keenly featured throughout, you hear a far heartier mix than any trio might offer. This self-titled recording is really the follow-up to their terrific 2001 release, Come Along. Elements of early Flying Burrito Bros. still haunt their material and quality songwriting definitely prevails throughout this easy mix of honky-tonk, ballads and alt. country twang rockers. As is their forte, its all about the broken heart, as made clear in songs like "Lonesome Again", "If Its All The Same" and "(I Pity) The Poor Bastard".
