Fam One: Redefining Whatâs Gangsta

As you sit back and listen to Welcome 2 Tha West Coast, youâre overwhelmed with that old-school West Coast feel⦠classic kicks and snares, melodic keys blended with deep bass chords and the familiar sound of hand claps that have long defined West Coast Funk. In this case, that someone (or some ones rather) is a west coast group called FAM ONE G.A.N.G.

Reviving the West
Thereâs a difference between being a âgangstaâ and simply gang-banginâ â and the difference lies within the definition. In the land of the red and the blue, banginâ is a way of life for some â and for the others â itâs a systematic way of controlling a segment of the population. A true gangsta is not bound by man-made boundaries. Heâs defined by his actions more so than his appearance and, on all accounts; a gangsta is more concerned with his business than he is with his adversaries. To put it more simply â Gangsta is banginâ when it grows up.

On Welcome 2 Tha West Coast, you get to experience that grown man gansta. That - true hustlinâ mentality. That â I will work three jobs if I have to â type of grindinâ. That -mature gangsta. Fam One delivers that classic West Coast sound â banging beats, rock influenced guitar riffs, thought provoking content, with just the right touch of R&B. Lyrically speaking, the deliveries of each member of the Fam reflects their distinct personalities. While their personalities vary greatly, as in every family, each of them lets you know exactly where they are coming from. Fam One was able to recreate that old school West Coast sound, which will keep their fans coming back for more.

After years of the music industry pumping out cookie cutter acts and music that sounds like the same ole stuff being played over and over again on the air, Fam One has arrived to redefine the West Coast. Their experiences and expertise, collectively and as individual artists, allows this eclectic group to formulate an original sound and a style that is long overdue.

Business savvy

When you everything you do revolves around your Family First, you know you canât go wrong. Fam One G.A.N.G. was formally established in 2002. And we all know that with every family, there comes a fair share of âfamily dramaâ. But like we said before, itâs family first, so instead of airing all the family business weâll get down to the facts. You see, itâs their loyalty to one another that sets Fam One apart from all the rest.

Fam One G.A.N.G.âs unconventional business structure has provided them with the flexibility of handling their individual careers while simultaneously working towards the collective goal. None of the members are signed to any type of recording contract and as it stands, they are all equal business partners in the family business. Jook will tell you, âI donât believe in that slavery s#!t⦠If a man chooses to do business with me itâs because itâs a pleasure doing business with me.â But donât get the wrong impression; Jook has a graduate degree from a prestigious university on the West Coast coupled with the size and presence to enforce his will. Individually, the Fam has been offered a variety of recording deals from several majors â all of which have been refused due to one technicality or another. Having spent many hours negotiating the terms of various recording contracts, the Fam has now focused their attention on securing a joint venture deal through a major. While the Fam is not opposed to working with a major, we will not recant our terms under any circumstance â now, thatâs gangsta.

Meet the band
Fam One G.A.N.G. consists of Jook, Bucc West, SeeJai, J. Thorn, Lucky Lou, Kevvy Traxx, Gator Beatz, and Erquhart.

Jook, the President and CEO of Fam One G.A.N.G., is a swift and calculated businessman, with a sharp intuition and unrelenting desire to succeed. Jook is somewhat hard to read at times, which makes him a hell of an executive when it comes to negotiations.

Bucc West brings that raw, street-level vibe in everything he says and does. You can bet Bucc West is always going to stir up some beef by saying what others are afraid to say and doing what everyone else wouldnât dare do.

SeeJai blends his soulful melodies with captivating lyrics to create music that will melt any heart. Perhaps the most sophisticated member or the group, he tends to have an indelible impact on his female fans.

J.Thorn is what youâd call a smooth operator. His cool, calm, even-temper, and objective style of negotiating keeps this family balanced. J.Thorn is responsible for FAM Oneâs bookings, collections, and mediating any potential disputes. His precision and class are just as evident in his flawless lyrics and delivery.

Lucky Lou has got that fresh new energy that makes people just want to be around him. His sense of style is impeccable, and everyone knows he is the premier source for whatâs hot in hip-hop. On-stage his crazy stagger and charisma resonate, and the women faithfully follow.

Kevvy Traxx, FAM Oneâs in-house producer, is a bit of a perfectionist who knows how to transcend borders when it comes to making beats. Although more of the strong-silent type in person, his personality screams out through his melodic chemistry on the tracks.

Gator Beatz has mastered the formula for that classic west coast beat that will make you want to pull out a phat one and blaze up. His elusiveness and mystery keeps the rest of the Fam at the edge of their seats. With this cat, you never know whatâs coming next. But, he always returns with the kind of sound that letâs you know you just gotta let him do his thang, his way.

Erquhart matches the definition of a true hustler. While he rolls solo the majority of the time, Erquhartâs spirit and dedication always remain with the FAM. A bit of a street poet, he paints a vivid picture of his experiences and thoughts through his lyrical genius.

In Welcome 2 Tha West Coast, Fam One wanted to pay tribute to old school West Coast hip-hop, which they did flawlessly. Youâd be hard pressed to find many successful independent artists in Southern California, where itâs all about playing the âHollywoodâ role for the media. âWe wanted to recreate the era when N.W.A. and Too Short served the streets, WITHOUT radio airplay and videos,â said Jook, Fam Oneâs President and CEO. He reveals that the mission was, âTo (finally) bring a voice back to Southern Cali., to remind folks when we used to buy CDâs not because the radio or MTV made it popular but because it was real.â
