Details:
Composer/pianist Matthew Goodheart explores a variety of contemporary music forms. His broad foundation, technical innovations, and sensitivity have allowed him to develop a solid reputation as a solo performer, collaborative artist, and composer.

His work spans a variety of forms and processes, from free improvisation to strictly notated chamber works. He has closely collaborated with such as artists Glenn Spearman, Fred Frith, Lisle Ellis, Wadada Leo Smith, Sue Schlotte, and Gianni Gebbia. He has also performed the works of Morton Feldman, Christian Wolff, Maggi Payne, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pauline Oliveros, and José Maceda. An active performer, he has toured throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.

SONOLUMINESCENCE (1996), Goodheart's first CD, demonstrates his early work's identification with the post-Taylor free-jazz tradition into which Goodheart was brought by his friend and mentor, the late tenor saxophonist Glenn Spearman. Spearman appears on the album, as do bassist Lisle Ellis and drummer Donald Robinson, both established veterans of the Bay Areaâs active free-jazz scene of the early- and mid- 90's. In a series of duets, bookended by quartet pieces and a final delicate solo work, the young Goodheart engages his elder musicians through a great variety of moods and provocations.

Selected by Jon Morgan of Cadence Magazine as one of the top 10 albums of the year, SONOLUMINESCENCE garnered significant critical acclaim, perhaps best expressed in the allmusic.com review:

"Possessed of a touch that encompasses all ranges of dynamics and feeling, and gifted with a prolific imagination besides, Matthew Goodheart is one of the finest young free jazz pianists working in the early 21st century."
