Winter 2010 gave us a new word. Ongkara. For its native land, Bali, it is a sacred word combining as it does birth and death, the Universe and life itself. For St Petersburg and Russia it is the name of a young band and their debut album released in February. Just as the very word is multifaceted, so much multidimensional and eclectic is the music of Ongkara. On the
junction of contemporary British progressive rock and Asian folk music, it brings the best of Eastern and Western musical traditions together in a many-layered sound cocktail of acoustic guitar, fuzzed out bass, Moog synth, plucked psaltery and saz, all these generously flavored with polyrhythmic drums and non-trivial vocal melodies.

The verbal layer of the album is as important and complex. Conceived as a program music piece, the sequence of 9 songs of
Ongkara reflects one of the meanings of the Balinese ancient word - the cycle from conception to death. A male gamete in search for an egg cell, foetus on the verge of birth, monstriparity, adaptation to the outside world and parting with it - these images provide the work with an extra dimension and give listeners chances to disclose new perspectives in already familiar songs.

"World music", the epithet which the band gained after participating in the international festival "The Creation of Peace
2009" where they performed on one stage with such artists as Manu Chao and Fun-Da-Mental, was confirmed during the work on the album. Canadian and Russian musicians took part in the record of the LP, it was nurtured by the Canadian producer Vlad Avy and so is tied to neither countries nor nations. In return it is to take a worthy place in the "World Music Heritage".
