It all started on a beach in Cozumel Mexico when Her Majesty came up with the phrase âJellyfish Boots.â That particular combination of words really stuck in my head and fired my imagination. I became aware of wanting to do something different with my next CD; something lighter and more whimsical. I decided to try returning to my roots and doing an all acoustic album. I wasnât sure exactly what form it would take but I was sure I didnât want any electric guitars or electronic drums on it. I didnât concentrate on producing at first just getting rough ideas down on my digital home recorder when inspiration struck.

The first songs to emerge were the instrumentals. âHer Majestyâs Smileâ (originally titled âHer Majestyâs Toesâ), Squeaky Clean (named for the prodigious squeaking of frets) and the title track which features my son Nirvan on banjo. Slowly lyrical ideas began to take shape; âSeptemberâs Childâ (a fatherâs words of advice to his son) âNever Never Landâ (about visiting fantasy land with someone you love), âKeep Your Powder Dryâ (about standing up to the forces of oppression) and âLost Wordsâ (born in a moment of introspective melancholy while sweeping the kitchen floor). After an old friend requested I send her some of my High School acoustic material I decided to resurrect âHalf Past Fourâ a song written when I was a teenager. I was surprised to discover I remembered the song in its entirety. âLove Lives Hereâ is about my family and the happy home we have built together. There are references to my wife âHer Majestyâs slippers are not made of goldâ, my son âhe spends half an hour combing his hairâ and my cat âthe princess is curled by the foot of the bedâ. Finally I was inspired by the words of a friend when he blogged; âIâd settle for a bad romance.â What came out was a song about divorce, an affliction for all too many American families these days.

The finished product is a major departure from anything I have released before. It is dreamy acoustic rock lightly seasoned with equal parts warmth, humor and tenderness. All of my CDs are a labor of love and this one is no different. Now that the project is finally finished I feel a bit like an empty nester. But there comes a time when we must give our children wings and allow them to fly on their own. These songs are my children. I hope you enjoy them.
