Seeing Barbara Dennerlein play live, has always been a special treat. This album, âLive on Tourâ, captures a live trio performance at one of Europeâs oldest and most famous jazz clubs, âJazzlandâ in Vienna where most US jazz stars have played at one time or another. The trioâs youngest member is Munich native Barbara Dennerlein on Hammond B3 and bass pedals, who, in the 20-some years since this recording was made, has gone on to worldwide fame. This trio also introduces two famous European players to North American audiences. They are multi-instrumentalist Oscar Klein and drummer Charly Antolini. âLive on Tourâ gives a unique look into the past, as a young 25-year-old Barbara Dennerlein already shows talent, professionalism and leadership far beyond her years. The album also shows how Barbara can really swing with old familiar jazz and big band standards.
At the time of this recording, the late Oscar Klein, a native of Graz Austria and the senior member of the group, was already a 40-year veteran of the European jazz scene and plays trumpet, guitar and clarinet. The third member, drummer Charly Antolini who hails from Basel Switzerland, has toured with the whoâs who of jazz, including Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Roy Eldridge, Jimmy Giuffre, and legendary Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell. Together as âD-A-Kâ they play a wide selection of old and new to the delight of the audience, from infectious swing tunes like âPerdidoâ to pages from the American Songbook like âSunny Side of the Streetâ and âDonât Get Around Much Anymoreâ. Thereâs Ellingtonâs signature âCaravanâ including an absolute knockout 7-minute drum solo by Charly, and âJessicaâ, a ballad composed by Oscar. But the highlight is Barbaraâs tribute to her idol Charlie Parker; first a spectacular organ solo âAu Privaveâ, written by Parker, then Barbaraâs own composition âTribute to Charlieâ. This album is a remarkable look back at a spectacularly talented young Barbara Dennerlein in a live setting, already leading her own bands since the 1980s, comfortable even at her young age playing with musical legends like Klein and Antolini, and soon to become known worldwide as the Diva of the B3.
(by Robert Wilson)
Oiginal Liner Notes:
DENNERLEIN â ANTOLINI â KLEIN is without any doubt the most original combination of the last years . It seems impossible that such different personalities could collaborate so closely, yet it is possible. The idea that this group could be something very special, suddenly struck OSCAR KLEIN, the senior of the group, who has been on the jazz scene for 40 years.
Originally it should have been only an experiment, but the first nights were so successful that the group decided to stay together. Since then D.A.K. has been very busy with countless concerts, club dates, and TV shows.
BARBARA DENNERLEIN is the soul of the trio with her unbelievable swing, playing with hands and feet. Her bass work on the foot pedals is simply stunning and her pretty appearance gives the group its special âflairâ.
CHARLY ANTOLINI gives his unmissable pulse with his fireworklike drumming, more intensive and passionate than ever. His âCaravanâ is a high point in this âliveâ production, with all the possibilities of his great potential.
OSCAR KLEIN gives different colours with his several instruments. Agressive and full of expression on the trumpet, romantic on guitar, and melancholic on clarinet (that he started playing one year ago). DENNERLEIN â ANTOLINI â KLEIN have a wide spectrum repertoire. Tradition in swingers like âPerdidoâ or âUndecidedâ, up-to-dateness in Barbaraâs own âTribute To Charlieâ (Parker, not Antolini), virtuosity in the incredible organ solo âAu Privaveâ, and timelessness in Oscar Kleinâs lovely ballad âJessicaâ. A real treat, recorded âliveâ in one of the oldest European jazzclubs, the âJAZZLANDâ in Vienna.
