Sad Pavilion was an evening of sound and noise at Mildredâs Lane, an artist residency in Scranton, PA. The event was curated by Bret Schneider and involved eight artists with sound stations spread throughout the wooded landscape. Listeners roamed the acres at night following the various aural emissions. For this event David Schafer [DSE] performed for one hour followed by MeKaniKdolls [MD] for one hour, then collaboratively as MDSE for one hour.

Seyhan Musaoglu and Jess Ramsay are visual and sound artists and comprise MD, an electronic noise duo. DSE is a visual and sound artist and performs independently as well as collaboratively with MeKaniKdolls [MDSE].

MD incorporate elements of live performance, interactive environments, analog and digital electronics, live vocal experimentation and the extensive use of conventional instrumentation with non-musical objects. Language is reduced to utterances of sound and endless loops in manipulated repetition. Conventional electronic instruments, including samplers, drum machines, synthesizers, loop machines and guitars, co-exist with low-tech handmade oscillators, circuit-bent toys, wearable objects with motion sensors, and laptops, to create a wall of sound that explores the tones of everyday life, the glitches in technology, and the chaos in composition.

DSE samples spoken word records from the 50âs and 60âs focusing mostly on anything to do with language, such as (medical-legal-office) dictation records, speech enunciation, audio-lingual, touch typing, and other corporate training records. These samples are looped and manipulated utilizing various sound editing and design programs as well as an effects board, vocoder, and guitar pedals. DSE mashes up the structures of the spoken language into disorienting soundscapes whereby the authority of the voice is disintegrated into stuttering hysteria.

MeKaniKdolls have performed at The Kitchen, New York Studio Gallery, Envoy Enterprises, Mildredâs Lane, Sapphire Lounge, Tandem, Gallery 151 and Istanbulâs famed venue, Babylon. David Schafer has performed at Mildredâs Lane, {SØNiK}Fest, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and soundShoppe in LA. MDSE has performed at Mildredâs Lane and {SØNiK}Fest.
