If Keith Richards and Loretta Lynn were in a barfight, this is what it might sound like.
12 MP3 Songs
COUNTRY: Country Rock, ROCK: Americana
Details:
It is a mired, ugly universe this little world of rock nâ roll. Folks want to call you something, put their little fingers on you. Sometimes they canât. Out of the gut of American music, the trash trough known as âAmericanaâ, come The Gaslights, influenced as equally by Loretta and Hank as Keith and Booker T. Theyâve got some songs about losing, and loving, and losing again (and perhaps getting the better of someone the third or fourth time around). Some songs about folks who have left, folks who are leaving, and folks whoâve long been gone. And then thereâs the drinking and the sinning and the cussing.....
In late 2003, veteran guitar slinger Chris Meck and singer/songwriter Abigail Henderson joined forces, recruiting Glen Hockemeier on drums and banged out a set. Several bass players later, Johnny Eggerman stepped in to handle lo-end detail. And so it was. Theyâre just three hard-working men and a lady playing music, sweating, drinking, and roving the Middle West in a big old van.
The band has kept itself busy over the last months, scoring opening slots with the likes of The Bottle Rockets, John Dee Graham, and The Meat Purveyors as well as headlining in and outside of the Kansas City area (as far away as Belgium). They hit a stage hard with their own take on American twang, as Hendersonâs vocals are layered on top of a tough-as-nails backbeat, punctuated by the ever present swagger of Meckâs guitar.
In late October, 2004, The Gaslights released their no-frills, no-filler debut, ââ¬ËMidwest Hotelâ to critical acclaim and promptly hit the road for much of the following year, stopping only to record the follow-up, ââ¬ËLines and Wiresâ, released in December 2005.
ââ¬ËLines and Wiresâ shows tremendous growth for The Gaslights, and for singer/songwriter Abigail Henderson in particular. Rich in scope and detail, ââ¬ËLines and Wiresâ astounds.
