Steven Smith and John Knauff have been writing and recording songs on their own for the last few decades. They met at work in 2002 and and in 2006 formed an acoustic duo to play covers at coffee houses. The duo was enjoyable but both had longed to play their own songs. This early 2008, Steve and John decided to try and write and record songs together.
âBrown Paper Bag and other Island Favoritesâ was stevenjohnâs first CD. âWe wanted to do a summer party cd and decided to do it with all reggae tunesâ John explained. âBesides, I had just purchased a bunch of reggae drum loops and was dying to try them out on a songâ.
Finally July 2009, stevenjohn released Brown Paper Bag to an enormous swell of positive reviews from 2 family members and 3 co-workers.
This early success sparked stevenjohnâs creativity and enthusiasm and in March 2010, they decided to record a follow-up cd. âWe were just humbled by the positive comment we received from Brown Paper Bag that we decided to record another CDâ Steve commented. âThis time, we decided not to restrict ourselves to any style or format. Oh the reggae format?..ya...kinda limitingâ
Song for âFun and Gamesâ began in March 2010 with the title track. âWe decided on a different approach this timeâ John explained. âOn BPB (Brown Paper Bag) we wrote one song and then recorded it. This time, we decided to have all of the song written and generally arranged even before recording the first track. Why?...becauseâ Some industry analyst speculate that writing songs before you record them generally makes for a more consistent and smooth sound.
âFun and Gamesâ was completed and release on December 18 and is already receiving excellent reviews. Hereâs what the critics are saying about âFun and Gamesâ...
"Take the Beatles, REM, Squeeze, the Beach Boys... put them in a blender, and you would get something that would approach (but not quite match) the musical genius of John Knauff and Steve Smith, aka stevenjohn!" - Rolling Stone Fan
â¨â¨"Sales of the upcoming 'Fun and Games' LP alone may well jump-start the long-awaited economic recovery..." - The Wall Street Journal Subscriber
â¨â¨"My outrageous costumes and stage shows are a mask to hide the fact that I will never be as good, musically, as stevenjohn. I am so jealous..." - Lady GooGoo (Lady GaGA tribute band lead singer)
â¨â¨"I have only heard one track from it so far, but I haven't been this excited for an album's release since 'Master Speaking to his Dog' by Thomas Edison and the Menlo Park Five." - A very old man who was walking down the street
