Short Bio of Jerry Jemmott
BASSIST -â EDUCATOR â PERFORMING ARTIST - COMPOSER â AUTHOR â CLINICIAN
After hearing Paul Chambers 1956 recording of âIf I Were A Bellâ with the Miles Davis Quintet, Jerry started his professional career two years later at the age of twelve, with Smilinâ Henry & The Rhythm Makers. As a disciple of bassists Paul Chambers & Charles Mingus, Bronx, New York native, Gerald Joseph Stenhouse Jemmott, got his big break when he was discovered by R&B/Jazz saxophonist King Curtis, and went on to become one of the architects of the Atlantic Records and Muscle Shoals Soul sound. He was a key member among the luminaries of the versatile jazz musicians that made up the New York City recording scene of the late Sixties and early Seventies with their roots dating back to the Roaring 20's days of Thomas "Fats" Waller, who dominated the studio bands.
âHe played on his first recording sessions in 1965, including Nina Simone's, âNina Simone Sings The Bluesâ, album. Thanks to his Atlantic Records connection through Curtis, Jemmott soon found work backing other Atlantic stars, like Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Jerry Jeff Walker, the Rascals, The Sweet Inspirations, Clarence Carter, Margie Joseph, Champion Jack Dupree and Roberta Flack. But that was just the tip of the iceberg; Jemmott also recorded on many other record labels with Rhythm nâ Blues and Blues legends like B.B. King, Freddie King, Otis Rush, Lightninâ Hopkins, Gil Scott- Heron, Don Covay, Lorraine Ellison, Howard Tate, Big Maybelle, Dee Dee Warwick, Ben E. King, and Erma Franklin, and backed jazz stars like Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Les McCann & Eddie Harris, Paul Desmond, Shirley Scott, Erroll Garner, Lou Donaldson, Houston Person, George Benson, Archie Shepp, Lionel Hampton, Herbie Mann, Eddie Palmieri, The Thad Jones & Mel Lewis Orchestra, Jimmy McGriff, and Richard âGroove" Holmesâ. *
"I make musical sense out of anything I hear", proclaims Jerry Jemmott. "If you knock over this table, I'll continue the phrase it creates in my head. That is basically what I do on bass". As a seminal 60's and early 70's session bassist in his early twenties, Jemmott is acknowledged as, "One of the most influential bass players of the past 100 years who have changed the way we play". *
B.B. King says, âHe never does anything just because itâs right to do; he likes to do it because it feels good doing it. He would come up with things that fitâ¦Quincy Jones has a way of working with people where heâll get them together and say âOkay, get into something. Jerry was the same wayâ¦. Jerry was very concernedâ.
He is the recipient of the 2001 Bass Player Magazine Lifetime Achievement Award and Chairman of the Electric Bass Department at the Richard Davis Foundation for Young Bassists Inc.
Over the years Jerry has performed all over the world. In addition to arranging and composing, he also teaches and participates in workshops, and clinics.
The âThe Groovemasterâsâ work can also be found on CDâs that feature his music, educational books, articles, cassettes, and videos.**
As âJerry Jemmott & Souler Energyâ he performs a mix of his original âCool Grooveâ songs and music along with his classic hits in addition to presenting his âSoul Kitchenâ, improvisation workshops & clinics.
