Review of Style is Back in Style

"Style Is Back In Style is a well produced CD, demonstrating a high caliber of professional musicianship, layered with your distinctive, unique vocals. It has an intimate, mellow and accessible feel to it, with an eclectic and interesting choice of cover songs - not the overdone, overly commercialized jazz "tunes" that are all too frequently covered. You have an enjoyable selection of songs from some of the best songwriters in jazz history, and perform them with respect, and perhaps it's your unique vocal style and a camaraderie among the musicians that lends such a "personal" feeling to these tracks. Your recording of the title track, Style is back in Style, makes it sound as if Lieber & Stoller wrote the song for you! Evidently, you have gathered a tight, professional group of musicians and you have a lot of fun performing.

"As we mentioned at the beginning of this review, Style Is Back In Style has a good, mellow, intimate feel to it, enriched by your unmistakable vocals. You have created a sophisticated jazz niche with a cool, nostalgic feel to it, resulting in a distinctive and well produced CD featuring some of the great jazz classics."

Style Is Back In Style
Lou Silvestri, Jim Karolides, Thomas Hebb, Rick Kress. Gumshoe Records

âThis twosome - Silvestri on piano and Karolides handling the vocals - has delivered a most unusual and enjoyable record. Karolides with his gravely voice adds the right touch to a number of out-of-the-trunk tunes. Silvestri, both as an accompanist and as a jazzy swinger on the keyboard, makes this outing very special. The evergreen Old Folks is performed at a mellow tempo with Karolides oozing out the meaning of every syllable aided and assisted by Silvestri's piano and also Hebb on bass and Kress on drums. Indeed, as might be said about every tune on the slate, it's a different sound, a different interpretation that will grab listeners' ears. A bright swinger is Candy, in which Silvestri really takes the tune up another notch in pleasantry while Karolides delivers a hearty joy-infested vocal. Any doubt that Silvestri might not be first rate all the way is dispelled as one hears his deft handling of the Ahmad Jamal composition Nightmist Blues. Silvestri infuses the piece with energy and his own personal style adding up to an infectious jazzy effort. The drums of Kress add another dimension to the offering and his solo fits snuggly within the riffs of Silvestri's piano adding the right dash to the proceedings.â

âFor those listeners who treasure a different take on the tunes, they've got their wishes filled here. Someday You'll Be Sorry with Karolides handling the Louis Armstrong lyrics is joyful. Silvestri's piano sparkles in support with Hebb's bass and Kress's drums nicely augmenting the entry. Other songs which are distinguished efforts include: As Time Goes By, Stella By Starlight, Skylark, Old Rockin' Chair and Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans. There are Duke Ellington's Do Nothin' Till You Hear From Me and Fats Waller's Black and Blue, and the combination of Silvestri and Karolides gives listeners something very special indeed. If you're looking for the offbeat and enjoyable this disc may well become one of your personal treasures. â D.W.Y.
