Long John Oliva - Buscando la Ortografía (Latin Jazz Network's Top 20 Latin Jazz Recordings of 2003)
Orisha Records - USA

The "Jazz Rumbero" creates a new groove in Latin jazz by going beyond the locked-in rhythms and typical call-and-response patterns of salsa-based jazz. The idea for this project came about when Oliva met Chucho Valdes and mentioned his desire to do an album dedicated to Jorge Alfonso "El Nino," Irakere's original conga player. The title, Buscando La Ortografía, symbolizes Oliva's never ending quest for "the right way" to play Cuban music. Oliva takes an innovative approach to tunes by Chucho Valdes and Rafael Hernandez. Moreover, he includes some original material. The music is an exciting blend of Afro-Caribbean rhythms, religious music, contemporary jazz and the rhythms of Brazil. Long John Oliva and the AC Timba Jazz Project are light years ahead of their time and taking the genre to new heights.
