Vocal jazz standards - a la Great American Songbook. Unabashed new treatments of some favorite jazz classics.
12 MP3 Songs
JAZZ: Jazz Vocals, JAZZ: Traditional Jazz Combo
Details:
Driving rhythms, searing vocals, and soulful interpretations of classic vocal jazz standards are what makes Meegan Colemanâs debut release âI Hear Musicâ a significant listening experience.
Capturing the essence of Carmen McRae, Nancy Wilson, and Sarah Vaughan, âI Hear Musicâ gives its audience the full gamut of emotions; from innocent love to crushing heartbreak to blissful elation, Coleman delivers performances that are both poignant and compassionate.
Her welcoming sound is like a warm blanket that envelopes you on a cold winterâs night. However, her unabashed execution on tracks like âChega De Saudadeâ ignites the swinging fire within.
Supported by some of the most skilled jazz musicians in the New York City area, Coleman achieves the goal of combining exceptional musicianship with sincere delivery. She succeeds at linking the uncomplicated feel of old style vocal jazz with an innovative modern style, sure to please generations of old and new alike.
Here is an album that elevates this genre to a new level, adorned with scat solos, invigorating embellishments, and unexpected treatments. This is the album that is a source for the boldness of new jazz vocalists celebrating the genius of timeless performers.
This is the musical luminosity of New Yorkâs Meegan Samantha Coleman.
"Along with a solid Jobim classic, (Chega De Saudade) Meegan Coleman's "I Hear Music" is a tribute to the Great American Songbook. Accompanied by strong arrangements and first rate players, Ms. Coleman captures the essence of some of the best of the standards. Whether ballads (Mercer's P.S. I Love You) or up tunes (They All Laughed), Meegan's artistry cuts through loud and clear." - Carl Strommen, world renowned composer and arranger.
âIt's not often in this day and age that we run across young talent that understands the pure meaning of jazz. I've had the pleasure and honor to listen to, arrange for, and become friends with Meegan Coleman. Meegan sings in the tradition of Sarah Vaughan, Ella, and Carmen McRae, yet retains her own identity. Her diction, pitch, phrasing and her ability to improvise on chord changes makes her a complete package. And she delivers the lyric with conviction and believability.â - Ron Aprea, award winning composer, arranger, and saxophonist.
A native New Yorker, Meegan began playing piano at the tender age of five. Melodies that floated through the air were soon interpreted through her fingers. Early recognition of Meeganâs budding musicianship led to frequent gigs as an accompanist and musical director throughout Long Island. Realizing that singing was the ultimate form of satiating self-expression, Meegan took her precocious talents to various local theatres and restaurants to provide entertainment in an old style with new treatments. âI just wanted people to relive that era of the lounge singer; that sultry âlay back, relax, take in the atmosphereâ vibe.â
Meegan earned her Bachelor of Music in Music Education at the Hartt School of Music and her Masterâs in Music History at Long Island University.
Meegan, who has had numerous arranging commissions, has two choral pieces published by Carl Fischer - "Old Dan Tucker" and "American Ladies of Song". As a music educator for over 10 years, Meegan thoroughly understands the importance of the arts in everyoneâs daily routine. To be able to share that gift with others and communicate that emotion is one of the most beneficial endeavors she has ever pursued.
