"Mark is one of the few songwriters who is able to easily move between a number of different styles and still tell a heart-felt story in every song.
14 MP3 Songs
COUNTRY: Country Folk, FOLK: Folk Blues
Details:
â...a genuine talent for compelling narrative...some truly exceptional brushes with lyrical genius- the urban country experience never sounded so appealing.â '"M.W. Americana UK
Raised in rural England, and now a resident of inner-western Sydney, singer-songwriter, mark lucas spins tales rooted in the dark underbelly of urban experience, informed by a land as untamed and contrasting as the characters who inhabit it.
Markâs songwriting truly captures a spirit of place having a style which is distinctly Australian yet not âAustralianaâ. As a performer, Markâs 20 odd years experience have seen him come full circle from country and folk beginnings, through a varied career in rootsy rock and pop and back.
November 2005 saw the release of Markâs third solo album. Working with long-time co-producer, Glenn Skarratt, âWhite Man Soul, sunburned country and the urban bluesâ is a collection of songs in an acoustic format, featuring a core group of Mark Oats (Bushwackers, Fiddlefest, Finn MacCool)- fiddle, Glenn Skarratt (Acoustic Shock, Donna Boyd Band)- mandolin, and Michael Vidale (Feral Swing Cats)- double bass.
âWhite Man Soulâ, is an intimate journey into the heart and soul of a songwriter continuing to develop a relationship with his adopted home country, and a changing world seen through the eyes of a well-travelled family man. At once traditional and contemporary, this album continues to work that deep story-telling vein that lives at the heart of true roots music.
âone of Australia's premier songwritersâ - Ken Date krdcountry.com
âa sheer joy on repeated listeningâ âDavid Dawson, Beat Magazine
âwell written, well played, a gentle pleasure, and virtually impossible to dislike.â- Patrick Wilkins, Americana UK
âa near perfect musical setting for these distinctly Australian tales of restless souls, ghosts of the past, desert vistas and suburban angst.â â Kim Cheshire, Country Update
Currently working on pre-production for a full band album scheduled for release late this year,
you can catch Mark and his band, The Dead Setters at one of a number of venues around Sydney and at various country & folk festivals. Check the website & gig guides for details
