Details:
I'm a singer and musician in New York. I have survived jingle sessions, childrens' records, Dixieland bands, society orchestras, banjo parlors, church choral singing, klezmer gigs and just about every way a singer can ply his craft. Over time I've developed some pretty definite ideas about what a good song is and what good singing is. 'If You Let Me Care For You' is a collection of some of my favorite love songs done the way I think they should be done. For me, a good song can be an exquisite distillation of human feeling. I hope I've hit the mark here and there.

Here are some further thoughts taken from the liner notes:

"... I had to decide what to do. Howie Leshaw [a good friend and fellow musician] insisted that I do love songs. I happily agreed and picked out 19 songs that seemed to speak to me. The selection was instinctive. It consisted mostly of standards that I felt hadn't been overdone, plus three of my own tunes. When I first looked at the list, I wondered what they had in common. In style, they were all over the lot. From a late 19th century sentimental ballad by the brother of the American novelist, Theodore Dreiser, to an album cut from the Beatles' Revolver. One answer was that they were songs I liked. It turned out to be better than that.

"All these songs had beautiful melodies. I felt that they all were interesting from a harmonic point of view. What surprised me was to find how many different aspects of love were expressed in the lyrics. From the declarations of love of "With A Song In My Heart" and "I Love You" to the foreboding of betrayal in "Poor Butterfly." From the poignance of loss in "I'll Be Seeing You," "Indian Summer," and "On The Banks Of The Wabash" to goofily getting lost in love in "East Of The Sun." From the torchy enslavement of "Beautiful Love" and "Body And Soul" to the liberating joy of "They Didn't Believe Me." From the hope of "My Ideal" to the fulfillment of "Here, There And Everywhere" and "Long Ago And Far Away." From the pledges of love in "If You Let Me Care For You" and "Because" to the confident simplicity of "The Folks Who Live On The Hill." From the aching longing for love in "Melancholy" to the comfort of love in "After All." And lastly, to the love for a child in "Sweet Lullaby."

"But after all, these are just songs. I've tried to sing them in a way that makes sense to me. I will have succeeded if they also make sense to you."
