âHe sure do play them horse teeth!â quipped 95 year old clarinetist Stranger Malone of Mickâs barrel house style. Along his musical journey, Mick Kinney has played stride piano at Manhattanâs Swing 46 with veteran tap dancer Harold Cromer (of Stump & Stumpy), fiddle with Creole jazzman Al Broussard in New Orleansâ French Quarter, and lap steel at Louisianaâs Cajun Rendez-vous. He has performed at McCabeâs in Los Angeles, the Bluebird in Nashville, and on NPRâs Mountain Stage. A versatile accompanist, he has also worked with John Hartford, Sarah Guthrie, Vic Chesnut, Victoria Williams, and REMâs Peter Buck. Mick is also a composer/lyricist par excellence, and his songwriting reflects his eclectic background. He calls his songs âvideos for ther ear.â His recording âNothing Left to Chanceâ of original songs was named Critics Choice by âCreative Loafing,â and Best Unknown Artist by âStomp and Stammer.â Currently Mick is working on a CD of Old Time Georgia fiddle tunes, as well as a recording of his original ragtime piano compositions titled âTango Rag Time. He is also a beloved teacher of fiddle, piano, and music theory in his home of Atlanta.
