What do Sonic Youth, White Zombie, John Zorn, Bill Laswell, Material, Swans, Angels of Light, Herbie Hancock, Cop Shoot Cop, Ex-Models, Ginger Baker, the Boredomes, Dresden Dolls Boss Hog and The Flesh have in common? The answer: recording in Brooklyn with Martin Bisi.
Some of the recordings have been genre-defining, like Herbie Hancock's "Rockit", which numerous contemporary turntablists featured in Doug Pray's award-winning documentary 'Scratch' cites as their initial inspiration, or Sonic Youth's 'Evol', which sparked an indie rock explosion.
Beyond this river of recordings flows another stream, moving as strongly but in it's own direction: Bisi's own records. His earlier work (on New Alliance/SST) focused on the South American/Native American undercurrents from his life, with results that were cinematic and experimental.
Bisi's latest release 'Milkyway of Love' signals a change in perspective. In Martin's words "I realised that I wanted to tell stories of everyday life. The seemingly trivial is really the fabric of all the the important stuff. 'Milkyway of Love' reflects the daily input I receive: it's rootsy and American and Hispanic. It's funny and ironic, like what's outside my front door."
When asked if there's a Johnny Cash fixation evident here, Bisi smiles and says "It's been working its way in covertly."
