ROCK: Folk Rock, ROCK: Americana

Details:
Written and performed by twin brothers Sean and James Mahoney, The Mahoneys features rock music with a wide range of influences and inspirations. The 11 songs on their debut CD include the happy bluegrass feel of "Take It Slow," the haunting melodies of "White Mountain Shadow" and cold-beer barstool rock with "Waiting For the Snow," a song written from their father's perspective as a ski bum in the late 60's.

"We were really going for that 'barbershop-raga' feel with our first album," says Sean, also an alpine ski coach, music teacher and disc jockey in and around Boston. The album was recorded from August to October of 2001 at Wellspring Sound (www.wellspringsound.com) in Acton, MA, and Sean produced and arranged the songs. "Timm Keleher, our engineer, has a great ear and really helped us find our sound."

Younger twin James wrote the lyrics to all but one song, and sings and plays guitar, "but I'm actually just a strummer. My job was to get the lyrics done on time, deal with the pizza guy, and keep the studio stocked with Ritz Bitz."

Sean plays every other instrument on the album, save fiddle, played by rising New Hampshire folk star Joyce Andersen (www.joyscream.com). Other guests include newcomer Christina Schell on three outstanding vocal turns, especially "Precious Time," Matt Spofford (Five Day 40, ex-Moontower) on guitar, Keleher on drums for two songs, and Gus Schepens (ex-Dark Riders of the Apocalypse, Van Schepens, Earl Bethel) with a slashing guitar part on "Up All Night."

Released by Tyrol Records on March 28, 2002, The Mahoneys represents a culmination of events and a challenging yet happy collaboration of two brothers. "We're excited about playing live, and continuing to write and record music," says Sean.
