Sampler Vol. III features all women songwriter-artists, a stellar cast including Beth Nielsen Chapman, Gretchen Peters, Tia Sillers, Angela Kaset, Mary Ann Kennedy and Jill Colucci.

As on each of the previous Nashville Underground Sampler CDs, each artist contributes two tracks: one of their biggest hits and a more obscure personal favorite.

The hits performed on Sampler 3 have inspired the sales of over 23 million albums, including âI Hope You Danceâ (Lee Ann Womack), âThis Kissâ (Faith Hill), âIndependence Dayâ and âSafe In The Arms Of Loveâ (Martina McBride), âNo One Else On Earthâ (Wynonna), and âSomething In Redâ (Lorrie Morgan).

How Songwriters See Themselves
By Drew Reid (edited for the web)

When Chuck Cannon played the Key West Songwriters Fest for the first time, people were clamoring for a CD to buy. The next year he came back with Mailbox Money, his only solo effort to date. Itâs got all the pre-How Do You Like Me Now? Toby Keith hits, plus more great songs that have been recorded by the likes of Lari White, Lonestar and John Michael Montgomery.

In addition to being a songwriter and publisher, in 1999 Chuck and Lari White, who are husband and wife, started the Nashville Underground collective. This is a unique record label made up of hit songwriters displaying the genius behind some of the biggest songs in contemporary music. How? By recording their own versions of their biggest hits, plus some personal favorites. With Chuck and Lari as Executive Producers, this idea has blossomed and flourished. Nashville Underground Sampler Vol. 1 was reviewed in this column upon release in 2001. (Triple thumbs up). They are now up to Nashville Underground Sampler Vol. 3 and itâs the ladiesâ show. All the artists on here are tremendous performers in their own right. Three have graced my festivals in Florida; Gretchen Peters, Tia Sillers and Beth Nielsen Chapman, and I can attest to their excellent performing chops. For the other three, Angela Kaset, Mary Ann Kennedy and Jill Colucci, all you have to do is get this CD and you will be convinced. From the incendiary kick-off of Beth Nielsen Chapmanâs "This Kiss" to the quiet genius of Gretchen Petersâ closing "Picasso And Me," this project is a sheer delight and enlightenment. High points are Jill Colucciâs extremely soulful "No One Else On Earth," always my favorite Wynonna song, and Angela Kasetâs reading of "Something In Red." Want to hear the original "I Hope You Dance?" Tia Sillers serves it up in shining fashion.

Mary Ann Kennedyâs version of "Safe In The Arms Of Love" lends credence to the old Nashville saw about how the demos are better than what ends up on the radio, and her new CD The Trail Less Traveled is represented here by "Ride My Pony."

Best of all, you can find all the above-mentioned music and so much more at www.artistsunderground.com. It is a comprehensive website with the histories and backgrounds of many very special artists and the music they create. Want to know whatâs really going on in Nashvilleâs songwriting community?
