A sensual voice tells of soul-searching ponderings of the human condition. Scratchy vinyl vocals give flashbacks of speak-easy days. Chirping crickets and muted trumpet solos transport you to another place. This debut album is mood-evoking music of the heart, nestled into a bed of solid drum and bass grooves that allow for space, but give it depth and funk. From soul-folk roots, this band is infused with tendrils of jazz.
The Girl
Originally from Manchester, England, Julia Beattie has somehow wound up on sleepy Salt Spring Island. Born of nomadic parents, it somehow makes sense that she would choose this restful misty hollow as the hub from which to
promote her first album, form her current band and start writing songs for her second cd.
The current band is The Orchid Room. The first album is self-titled. Julia's music is cool, sensual and mood-evoking. It seems to capture the feel of the west coast in its own rainy, dreamy way. Her vivid, lyric based
songs are rooted in folk but are never far from her soul, funk and jazz-filled childhood. All this is woven into a bed of bass and drum grooves (made by Mike Southworth) and interspersed with vocal loops, muted trumpet, Memphis slide, flamenco guitar, Italian clapping rhythms, some
glass clinking and a solo by the king of the Hammond B3, Simon Kendall (Doug & The Slugs).
