Details:
It's hard to pin down the sound that A New Dawn Fades creates, such songs as "Two Nine Six Four" blasting in and out of the garage category along with Nathan McGlothlia's on-the-minute drumming, masquerading what seems to be pots and pans as tight implemental notes that drop the listener into a room of absolute sound.
PJ Sykes joins the implemental storming of the castle with his Led Zepplin-esque guitar opera, linear bass playing adventures, and a philosophy that screams bands should not sing, just be heard.
Based out of Richmond, Va., A New Dawn Fades is simply two men on a sonic quest to disrupt all that can be understood in this physical world. No, there are no lyrics. Now that that is out in the open, reopen your mind and try not to be scared. Just because there are not a bunch of nice words arranged together to form what some might call coherence does not mean that a band should automatically be written off and ignored. On the contrary, they should be praised and thanked for walking a different path from that of the conventional artist.
I am not saying that this is a totally original concept in the world of music. There is a little thing called classical music that has been doing this for hundreds of years and pretty much has it down pat. What A New Dawn Fades manages to do is create a musical picture in the head of the listener, one where they paint the lyrics to a scene happening in a world they create.
It's a lot to take in at first, but once you get used to all that extra free time that is usually spent singing along to the lyrics, you might find some better use of your time. Have you considered pottery?
So what exactly is being said here? What am I trying to accomplish with this little blurb about a band that you have probably never heard of? Obviously, I want to brighten your horizons a little, maybe even make your day by introducing you to something that is a little spicier than the meal you are used to preparing.
I recommend that you see the duo that is A New Dawn Fades live before you go out and purchase their album (Which you can do for cheap when you see them live, isn't that convenient?). The full emotion and experience is lost when bleeding through a stereo. The energy that PJ and Nathan let loose during a live set is something that must be experienced first hand. Not only is the music captivating and enjoyable, but the humor and good vibes make for very good times indeed.
Their next scheduled event is with under-the-radar rebels Q And Not U, Forget Cassettes, and 302 Acid at Nanci Raygun in Richmond. Excusing the distance, there is really no reason to avoid this show, especially since it is only seven bucks. Besides the band, there are pool tables and Ms. Pacman, so its old school fun all around.
While PJ claims that their soon-to-be-released material surpasses their previous recordings, its hard to believe that their "Sound Pressed Into Texture" EP can be surpassed. Definitely worth the $5 I dropped for it, it has everything from blasting bass lines to pot-tapping drum arrangements.
Since they are still pretty local despite their incredible talent, the band is pretty easy to book for any event that you have coming up, so if you can't go to them just have them come to you.
With all their upcoming events and merchandise available at www.anewdawnfades.cherubrecords.com and any of their shows, this is definitely an act to be observed.
