Cary Brown is a versatile professional pianist/keyboard artist, having performed worldwide with many diverse performers at some of the worldâs most distinguished venues. He began his training in classical piano under the tutelage of Jeffrey Marcus and continued to earn a double-degree from the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester in classical piano performance and film studies. While studying at Eastman, Cary was also fortunate to be trained in jazz piano and arranging by Bill Dobbins and Rayburn Wright.

After college, Cary continued his jazz studies with pianists Donald Brown and Harold Danko and co-founded the notable avant-jazz group The Lunch Factor in Boston where it enjoyed a cult following and was known for its âOrnette-Coleman-meets-Frank- Zappaâ musical stylings and its impressive display of hanging lunch meats loaned to them by the Berklee School of Music.

After a brief period studying Afro-Caribbean percussion, keyboards, and steel drums during his tenure with the Boston-based calypso group Panorama, Cary was asked to join Jamaican-jazz pioneers The Skatalites as their keyboard/organ player. He toured internationally with them for 4 years in the U.S., Europe, and Japan and also appeared with them on the Conan OâBrien Show and on their first U.S. release, Skavoovie (Shanachie Records). After leaving The Skatalites, Cary co-founded The New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble and continued his international touring as their keyboardist and composer/arranger; they performed at jazz and reggae festivals and venues throughout Europe and the U.S. including the North Sea Jazz Festival in Den Haag, Netherlands; the famous Jazzhaus in Freiburg, Germany and The House of Blues in New Orleans, Chicago, and Los Angeles. He is featured on The New York Ska-Jazz Ensembleâs first 3 albums and on their more recent releases Skaleidescope (Brixton Records) and Live in Europe (Grover Records).

After what could be described as the âSka-Jazzâ phase of his career, Cary spent a few years recording and touring with singer-songwriter Sloan Wainwright and her band. He appears on 4 of her studio recordings and one live recording, and he performed with her numerous times at the Falcon Ridge folk music festival.

Presently, Cary is gigging and recording with his own jazz group, The Cary Brown Trio, that features NYC drumming sensation Pete Zimmer and seasoned jazz bassist Jeremy Allen. They have just released their first eponymous CD, which features Caryâs original compositions and arrangements. He is also currently the musical director for the Purchase College Conservatory of Dance in Purchase, NY; The Steffi Nossen School of Dance in White Plains, NY; and the Harvey Cavalier Camp in Katonah, NY. He is an active freelance composer and performer and also has a thriving private teaching practice based in Westchester and Putnam counties in New York.
