JAZZ: Bebop

Details:
Phil Person was born in Tacoma, Washington on March 4, 1958. He showed an early interest in music, studying piano until he was 10, then switching to trumpet. At 12 his father's records began to impress him, especially the music of Louis Armstrong; thus began his life-long love affair with jazz. Teenager Phil's interest in jazz expanded to bebop and beyond. In 1978 he entered the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and became a featured soloist in the bands of Herb Pomeroy, Phil Wilson, and others. In 1981 he toured with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction of Buddy Morrow. In 1988 Phil joined the Artie Shaw Orchestra directed by Dick Johnson and has been a member of the band ever since. Phil has appeared with many famous names in the music industry including Buddy DeFranco, Tony Bennett, Keely Smith, Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme, Kay Starr, and Lou Rawls, just to name a few. Phil has been a Berklee faculty member since 2003. "Personology" features some of Boston's best jazz musicians including Dick Johnson-Alto & Clarinet, Jon Wheatley-Guitar, Chris Taylor-Piano, Todd Baker-Bass and Bob Savine-Drums.
