The SCHMEATLES are Gabriel, Bartholomew, Wil and Vincent, four carefree lads who started out writing and singing sweetly melodic pop songs about true love in a dank, dingy basement. But soon a growing cynicism compelled them to move upstairs into the garage, where they drove the neighbors insane with loud guitars and relentless, throbbing rock & roll. Their debut album title is based on the recurring chant "number nine...number nine...number nine..." from Revolution #9 on the Beatles White Album. The 15 songs they selected represent an eclectic progression from popish love songs ("Destiny" and "Okay") to simple, acoustic ditties ("Candi Lou" and "Where Did You Go?") to psychedlic nursery rhymes ("Bubbles" and "Children's Parable") to introspective lyrical numbers ("You Should Have Listened To Your Mother" and "Hunky Dory") to the culmination of their evolution as a band ("Edge of Hunger" and the neo-spiritual "Salvation Tonight"). The songs evolve as well, both musically and lyrically, from "Destiny" as a statement of naive certainty that true love is meant to be to "Can It Be?" as a statement of uncertainty about life and love and where fate is actually taking us in this vastly screwed-up world. In the end, they decide "Love Is All That Matters Anyway" and to hell with everything else. Enjoy the evolution.
