Though you may not know her name, TJ Evans is no stranger to this business. She hails from a long musical background, starting with great uncle, Peter Bocage (1887-1967), who was one of the great trumpeters of New Orleans history, and cousin to piano giant Eddie Bo (1930-2009). Her mom, Babbs, spent years touring as a vocalist with George Clintonâs Brides of Funkenstein and after recording âParadisoâ with her uncle, Cordell âBoogieâ Mosson of Parliament Funkadelic on bass guitar and backup vocals, TJ Evans is coming out of the gate with something fierce. With a passion for rock and roll, R&B, funk, and blues, TJ has fused together her own kind of rock. Tall, with a mop of curly black hair, a knitted necktie, and visible tattoos, you hardly know what to expect from her when she picks up her guitar and gets on stage. After catching a recent performance, I can tell you what to expect. Expect to be stunned. Expect to try to mentally match the mysterious face with the passionate and almost gritty, yet soothing voice you are hearing. Expect to be, at times, caressed or nearly pinned to the wall with the richness and power of her vocal delivery. Expect to wonder why there is no one like her already out there. TJ is backed by a band of white boys, but the boys play some funky music! On bass, Cody Stewart provides a tight rhythm and groove slap technique that is anchored flawlessly by Ritchie Berberenaâs funk style percussion. A refreshing aspect of TJ Evansâ lyrics is that they completely ignore the likes of bling, status, and other such topics she deemed as nonsense. What I heard from her were words of wisdom. Of Choices. Of pain. I would challenge any listener, better yet, anyone who has lived in this life, to not identify with what TJ is telling us. Off stage, I noticed that TJ seems quiet and doesnât say a whole lot, and now I know why. Her music has already said it all.
