Details:
This double album is a premiere recording of music by Polish-Ukrainian composer Kir Kuklowsky (1913-1999). A prominent symphony orchestra conductor in Europe before World War II, Kuklowsky migrated in 1950 to the United States where he wrote most of his compositions. Among his works are some 50 pieces for solo piano, all recorded in this volume.
Kuklowsky's early life was a series of tumultuous events, punctuated by two world wars and the Russian revolution. His biography sheds light to the often turbulent emotional current coursing through some of his music. Other pieces are more light-hearted, drawing inspiration from Ukrainian folk songs and Eastern European landscape from another time. Pianist Andrew Banks brings the works to life with gentle lyricism. The music is neo-Romantic, rich in melodic beauty and imbued with nostalgia for a bygone era.
