Hazen Metro is a piper/flautist who hails from Vermont, USA, but has lived in Glasgow, Scotland for the past 4 years. Here he has received his BA - Scottish Music - Piping (Honours) degree at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. During this time he has also played with such bands as King Arthur's Men, and The John Langan Band, as well as working on teaching projects across Europe, most recently in Rostov, Russia. His newest work, A Piper's Tirade is the culmination of his past four years living in and traveling around Europe. It is a bold new work that displays his many foreign influences along with his strong passion for Scottish traditional music.
The album explores all of the modern genres of Scottish pipe music, from traditional, multi-instrumental acoustic ensembles to electronically-fused compositions. The album also includes a pipe quartet, which, although is of a pipe band style, includes daring harmonies and rhythms comparable to the work of Mark Saul. Each style, although varied, is bound together by Metro's unique perception of contemporary traditional music.
Each track is a completely original piece of music, composed, arranged, recorded, and edited by Metro himself. On it he plays Highland pipes, small pipes, border pipes, and flute, but is also joined by Chris Waite (guitar), Charlie Heys (fiddle), Alastair Caplin (fiddle), Marissa Vachon (bodhran), and Bryan Benner (voice, oud, hand percussion, guitar). All of whom are up and coming musicians in the Scottish Music field, excepting Bryan Benner who is a singer/songwriter and Opera singer.
