Wait one hot minute â whatâs that about Greek music?

Effiâs a first generation American who grew up in a home where music was king â her grandfather was an opera singer, and her mother inherited his voice. She began learning classical piano when she was a little kid âand listened to U2, Hendrix, Jeff Buckley (she was obsessed), blues and Led Zeppelin, feeling each artist or band for something different: Zeppelinâs genre-defying, driving rhythms and powerful vocals, Buckleyâs cred as a tunesmith, U2âs melodics. The other music she loved and absorbed was the traditional Greek music she heard at home or on many trips to her parentsâ birthplace in Athens.

Listen to Effiâs tunes and youâll hear phat grooves, melodic vocals, lyrics that ask the âbigger questionsâ and powerful, unusual rhythms that mark her hot-blooded lineage. âGreeks are not reserved people,â Effi explains, âItâs an extremely passionate culture, full of loud conversations - and a very rich history of vocalists - many vocalists who are so incredibly beautiful. Effiâs working on her third recording, and she plans to go deeper down that path â and continue connecting with an audience drawn to her passionate sound.

âYa know, sometimes I love a traditional rock line, and other times, itâs like I canât deny the attraction of that sexy layering of vocal over guitar and odd rhythms â itâs that longing thatâs so connected to the Mediterranean soundâ¦and I love working with other American musicians who have strong ties to another culture. Itâs a short cut I love to take!â She starts writing a rhythm or a groove, and a melody will follow. Lyrics begin with a thought or an idea thatâs been floating around; she writes about things that concern her: sometimes her lyrics speak to romance or friendship, sometimes to practical concerns- like the music business- and sometimes to the bigger picture â like why are we on the planet?

â I wish there were more room for artsâ¦I wish honest music had more of a center pieceâ¦one must have faith in finding an audienceâ¦.I donât want to focus on what pisses me offâ¦.I want to say good things and do good thingsâ¦..â These are all themes that are on Effiâs mind now.

Effi almost became a scientist, sort of following in her parentsâ footsteps (they are both engineers), and thinking it was the practical thing to do. When she picked up the guitar in college, it really felt right to her ââand,â Effi says practically, âit was portable!â One day, a broken heart drove her to start composing. It also caused her to look around and declare, âART IS THE GREATEST THING THERE IS!â
