For this third volume of John Hurt songs, I chose to record with just my own guitar accompaniment. Most everything Mr. Hurt recorded in his lifetime was done this way, and there's something nice and uncomplicated about a single guitar and a voice. Having to do all the picking myself with nowhere to hide, I did miss the fine playing of Jason Bailey, John McKay and the other pickers who joined me on the first two records. I am also happy to have included a song I wrote for John Hurt called "Dear Old Daddy John" on this volume. The response this song has received from John Hurt fans has been very gratifying. Thank y'all - I'm much obliged for that. I got to visit the Hurt homestead in Avalon over the Labor Day weekend 2010, and had a very fine afternoon of picking and singing with some outstanding folks who came from all over. Daddy John was somewhere just similing, I imagine, and wanting to get up and pick with everybody. I hope to have some new videos posted on YouTube soon, and for all the folks who have bought my records and have said nice things, I hope you enjoy this solo outing of mine. To sit with the guitar and play John's songs is such a great pleasure, and I'm glad to share it with you. - Lost Jim 1/28/11
