A recording based on American made Ensoniq(hence the name Soniq) brand synthesizers now almost considered to be vintage digital. The music was composed using only hardware synthesis with slight computer assistance for compositional arrangement and audio recording.
Music was realized on the Ensoniq VFX-SD(modified to SD-1) and an Ensoniq ESQ-1 with the addition of a Ensoniq SQ-R+, DP-4 processor and some minor use of a Novation Nova.
The concept was to take these older instruments and carve out long, ethereal ambient soundscapes that convey a timeless space to listeners. Considered limited by today's standards these machines offer a special timbral quality that made them unique and a niche in the world of contemporary music making tools.

Made on a few Ensoniq hardware synthesizers with slight computer assistance for compositional arrangement and audio recording. With these synths, known for their special timbral quality, Gregory mapped out eight fine tracks of ambient soundscape music with sequenced parts, all conveying a timeless space to listeners. Opener âSundial Westâ sets out nicely with smooth sequencer patterns and spacious textures, which made me think of Roachâs âDestination Horizonâ. Also the warm, gliding soundscapes on next track âEternal Panoramaâ stay close to the cinematic electronics and vibe found on Roachâs concept album âWestern Spacesâ. Pleasant atmospheric realms are further explored on âSustained Environmentâ and âSweeping the Soniq Spectrumâ. The latter piece features a pronounced solo voice, followed by engaging spatial sequencing and the input of an analogue drum machine. âDynamic Atmosphereâ, carved out of minimal-oriented sequencers and layers of floating soundscapes, contains a strong move-forward feel with its dynamic undercurrents.

âContours & Cloudformsâ elegantly rounds out he album with mesmerizing, atmospheric sensibilities.

All in all, the moody and versatile ambient outcome of âSoniq Variantsâ is proof the AWM-concept is still alive and kicking, and more than worth a listen.
