About the CD:
Recorded in a single take, the critically-acclaimed solo for mridangam-- the ancient South Indian drum-- is an original composition specially set in the traditional Indian time cycle of 2 kalai Adi Tala, which consists of 16 repeating units.
Equally improvised and precomposed, the solo features a wide display of rhythmic intricacies, including elaborations in complex subdivisions of 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9, and highlights the stunning tonalities of the mridangam.
Blending the rich percussive styles of a host of Indian drums like the tabla, tavil, and khanjira, as well as the legendary techniques of past masters of Indian percussion, Rohan creates a refreshing and inimitable style on the mridangam.

About Rohan:
Acclaimed an âinternational performer and promoterâ of the South Indian drum, the mridangam, by USA Today, 19-year-old Rohan Krishnamurthy has performed in numerous Indian classical concerts in India and North America since the age of nine with leading Indian musicians. Today, he is considered a young celebrity in the Indian Music scene.
Having received initial training on the mridangam in the US and continuing advanced study in India, Rohan has collaborated in cross-musical ventures with well-known symphony orchestras, jazz ensembles, etc., and has presented several Indian percussion summer camps, workshops, academic lecture-demonstrations, and outreach events throughout the US.
Rohan is the recipient of many prestigious awards, including USA Todayâs All-College Academic Second Team, the Percussive Arts Societyâs Thomas Siwe Scholarship, âYoung Artist of Indiaâ by Bharat Kalachar (Chennai, India), and âProdigy in Performing Artsâ by the Indo-American Center in New York.
An innovator, he has redesigned the ancient mridangam to make it more user-friendly and has published a research article in Percussive Notes, the leading music journal for professional percussionists. Currently a third year Heyl Foundation Scholar at Kalamazoo College pursuing a double major in music and chemistry, Rohan has won departmental honors for his innovative leadership in bridging the College and community through musical initiatives.
