CD Review: Kev- Acoustic Dreams

If you like acoustic guitar youâll love this CD.
Usually there isnât much to talk about when thereâs but one chap on one guitar. I mean, what is there really to say?
If that chap is KEV-Kevin Rones; you could say he plays damn fine guitar. You could even go so far as to say he plays with the best of ââ¬Ëem, discarding the time honored C7 strum school in favor of complexity through counterpoints and woven lines coming together to imply the chord changes along the way. There are no overdubs. No special magic studio tricks. There isnât even any help aside from the nice clean mastering by John Katchur, as Kevin Rones produced the work as well. Just good guitar work. The compositions are superb and the execution is excellent, my personal favorite being âLucia,â mainly because of the âteasingâ of the first two minutes. âDakotaâ runs a close second.
While there is an aggressive guitarist here, with the definite and deliberate upper hand in his relationship with his guitar, there is also a tenderness in the handling. Itâs still downright ballsy. Downright eloquent. But often sweet. In concrete terms you can hear the post-Celtic-nouveau thing amid modern and not so modern approaches to handling the guitar.
Listening to this CD might draw analogies with the likes of our very own Jim Earp, Lawrence Juber, Michael Hedges, Pierre Bensusan, with a dose of rock and roll ââ¬Ëtude, and some âSpanishyâ stuff now and then. All the while Kevin Rones remains his own man, liking his spot in the mix, reporting to only to his âsourceâ when it comes to his relationship with his guitar. This must be what love sounds like to him ...quot; collected in each God powered episode, which we refer to as tracks.
Another thing worth noting is that he could easily decide to be overly flashy and rambunctious, as though heâs trying to prove something. But no. He certainly has the mettle to go overboard with finger-style pyrotechnics. Instead, Rones makes option for what is palatable to the human ear ...quot; never overdosing the listener with facility, but going to that edge. And every now and then when you need it (and least expect it), he rips the lick from hell on you just to let you know he can shred you to pieces when the whim overcomes him. A superb collection of virtuoso acoustic guitar instrumentals,
beautifully arranged and melodic as heck. Stylistically it's a little
hard to pin down, as it incorporates flamenco, celtic and classical
influences mixed with KEVs deft touch and sense of melody. If you're at all interested in the sound of the guitar, then this is an album you'll want to spend some time with.

SAN DIEGO MUSIC MATTERS......
Excerpt from www.sandiegomusicmatters.com
KEV-Kevin Rones
Try to think back to a time when musicianship mattered, when musicians played heart strings in addition to the strings on guitars. The soul of a true musicianâs music is within their own soul. It is this extension of self that is a profound element to the emotion within their music. These tides of expression sway within the long, nordic blonde hair of a San Diego guitar god, simply called Kev. Kev is a musical anomaly and a guitar guru whoâs genuine love for the virtues of sound and beauty electrify your senses with a passion that has yet to be replicated by musicians of lesser talent.
Kev came to us at the sdmusicmatters.com office, jovial and beaming with an energy that intensified our day. And when he performed, the usual hum and buzz of the office stood still to bear witness to Kevâs performance. All became peaceful and one with this solitary performer who only needed his acoustic guitar to expel a robust and pristine sound. When you hear Kev play, it is as if he is crafting music around the very energy of life. Kev utilizes every part of his instrument. From the strings to the belly of his acoustic guitar, he slaps his hands over the body and sways while a gentle and peaceful smile curves over the face. There is an ocean of sound that stems from only one man. Itâs simply amazing and it is a truly beautiful thing to watch.
Though his music contains no lyrics, it is often the unsaid and implied grace of true musicianship that commands the greater presence. Kevâs gentle intensity is the defining element in the splendor of his music. While busy writing music, Kev has also been the main component in organizing and promoting his âAcoustic Undergroundâ, a local acoustic artist collective at local coffee shops and smaller more intimate venues. Kev has also organized his widely popular âHeart Strings Festivalâ. The âHeart Strings Festivalâ is Kevâs nod to the importance of music in kidsâ lives. The organization helps to arrange music lessons for kids and to get the younger audiences interested in picking up instruments.
Kev teaches us to keep our hearts open to the possibilities of life and of music, especially since the two are often synonymous. Keep your eyes and ears on Kev and keep your heart open to the sounds of absolute energy.
