Details:
If you have ever listened to the Shout Bamalama podcast, you have heard the host Count Brockula say, "Let's get gritty, greasy, lowdown and sleazy." I'm here to tell you that if you listen to The Last Known Movements of Elvis by Surf Sluts, you will get all of those things. And loyal reader, I hope you know enough about my musical tastes to know that I mean that as a compliment.
After what sounds like an air raid siren at the beginning of "Down," you are greeted by some greasy guitar and saxophone, delivered with a lot of energy. Oh, and if you like that, get ready for more. Every song is an all-out blitz of gritty guitar, driving drums, rumbling bass, and greasy saxophone.
There are some great tunes on this album. "She's a Bad Motorcycle" is a classic. I mean, a band like this has to have a song about a vehicle. Frankly, I can't imagine this band writing a song about any other sort of vehicle. "The Owl" is one of those songs that is creepy but really gets your attention. It begins with a guy using a voice like WC Fields saying, "Excuse me young lady. I've been watching you for a while and I think I have something you might find interesting." It is followed by the sound of a zipper. Mind you, I don't condone the stalking behavior described in this song, but it is a catchy tune. Jut try to keep still when you listen to this one. And then there is "Like Wow Wow She's a Mau Mau." If you think this is a song you need to hear just for the title, you're right.
This is high-energy trashy rock and roll with a dash of surf and rockabilly. That's one way of putting it. Another way is to say that this band sounds like what would have happened if Gas Huffer, The A-Bones, and Deadcats formed a supergroup fronted by Mark Sandman of Morphine. There is also some similarity to local band Graceland Mafia, particularly in the guitar at the beginning of "Head Explodes." If you like a rough edge to your music and you love that greasy, trashy sound, pick up The Last Known Movements of Elvis. Just look at that album cover and try to tell me you're not intrigued. The only thing I'd downgrade this album for is being too short. At only 29.5 minutes, it hits hard and fast and leaves you wanting more.

I have a soft spot for Surf Sluts. They are just too fun to pass up. There may be just one ripe instro on this release, but The Last Known Movements Of Elvis is a really solid package of high energy rock and roll, with tuff horns and demented lyrics. "1000 Miles Away" is particularly interesting because the song is based on "Surf Rider." Great fun!
