Details:
Walk into the Sea is the sophomore release from the prairie independent folk collective, Slow down, Molasses (SDM). Since their last album, Iâm an Old Believer, SDM have toured across Canada and shared the stage with amazing acts like Attack in Black, The Acorn, The Weakerthans, Plants & Animals, and Julie Doiron (who also appears on Walk into the Sea).
Slow down, Molasses have matured since their last effort, leaving behind the dust-speckled alt.country ramblings of Iâm an Old Believer. Walk into the Sea is an evolution of SDMâs songwriting into a sound with many moods. At one moment the album is as soft and gentle as falling snow, at other times a devastating, wall-of-sound affair. A myriad of instruments create a canvas of heartbreaking, shimmering songs, with both subtle sad tracks and majestic anthems, boasting arrays of horns, strings, and harmonies, all pushing to cathartic crescendos. Walk into the Sea takes the best parts of simple, classic songwriting and mixes it with modern indie and shoegazer sensibilities. The album was mixed by James Bunton (Ohbijou) and features guest appearances from Julie Doiron and Ontarioâs Olenka & The Autumn Lovers as well as a host of talented prairie musicians.
The band is led by Tyson McShane, who was tasked with corralling and leading a diverse group of players that all have families and careers separate from the band. Slow down, Molasses includes a geological engineer, a journalist, a CAD Engineering student, a touring sound tech, a city planner, a college professor, and a university administrator. However, the camaraderie that accompanies creating music together is a compulsion every musician understands, so itâs no surprise that the band come back together like family when itâs time to record and tour for each new SDM record.
Slow down, Molasses have risen quickly enough on the Canadian music scene that it makes their name an irony. After the success of Iâm an Old Believer, SDM toured Canada twice, stopping to play gigs like the Halifax Pop Explosion. In addition to being in regular rotation on CBC Radio 3, they were Track of the Day several times, and also recently recorded a set for CBC Canada Live. They were included in podcasts from NXEW, Herohill, and UK website, The Line of Best Fit's best of Canadian music.
âSlow Down, Molasses are like the Broken Social Scene of the prairie, and their music, both individually and as a group, always tastes good no matter how you mix it.â
- Exclaim!
âChannelling the spirits of Neil Young, Bonnie âPrinceâ Billy and Low...â
- FFWD Weekly
âThey have a sound as spacious as Saskatchewan!â
- Grant Lawrence, CBC Radio 3
