âStep Into My Lifeâ is Henry Allenâs claim to fame as Hawaiiâs top Jazz guitarist ever, with the energy of a few of the worldâs famous and recognized music figures from this era and up to today. This was Herb Onoâs dream for Henry, who believed in him and his music and asked him to record exclusively for his âSounds Of Hawaii Recording studio then on Yong Street in Honolulu. Herb put up the money to take Henry to Los Angeles to find the âright Jazz groupâ to back him up for this project! His good friend, Alan Sides, owner of âOcean Wayâ studio took them around town to hear different Jazz groups. Wayne Henderson, formerly of the Jazz Crusaders, and now with the LA Boppers and his âAt Home Productionsâ had the right sound and energy Herb wanted for Henry.
The group was flown to Maui âincognitoâ out of the public eye to do the arrangements. Henryâs and Wanes good friend, George Benson wanted to be on the record and George would play and give Henry three songs for the album. This was great! After the few days on Maui, the tracks were laid down in Herbâs studio. The âfirst takeâ on Henry and Georgeâs were perfect! The second takes were identical. The whole album âcame togetherâ in a one-time collaboration of great music, players and energy.
After the sessions, two days, Herb took the group out to the popular then âMongolian BBQâ spot where you could order your choice of meats and have it stir fried in the big Chinese woks! This was an unforgettable experience for the group from LA! All cuts except âMasqueradeâ were done by Henry Allenâs band with Wayne Henderson. Henry flew back to Honolulu shortly an laid down anther tract with Keyboard great, Loni Smith, who was living and working on Maui, with Henry and having George Benson sitting in many times as George had his home there at that time.
On leaving the studio that final day Herbâs son came running after Henry and gave him a cassette tape of what he said is the mix down so far of al the tracks done. Henry brought it home and put it away in the tape drawer.
Henry and Sherron were in a head-on auto collision hit by a drunk driver in December. Henry was hospitalized at Queenâs in Honolulu, for six months straight and then back and forth to Honolulu at Queens for several surgeries for his feet and legs. Sherron was on Maui in Maui Memorial for several months. The project was put âon holdâ at that time. George Benson and others visited Henry regularly while there. Ours was the case that changed the âdram Lawâ for drunk drivers in Hawaii as we had survived. When Henry went back into the studio to finish last minute details with the quarter inch tape, it was damaged and mildewed and could not be restored by any means at that time. Then Herb Onoâs studio was closed and all contents seized and no one could find the tapes of the sessions.
In 2004 while working on the Crystal Harmony Cruise ship for a month, Sherron found the cassette tape of the session n the drawer untouched and un played all those years! I had it burned to a CD to save it. It did. Hen the process of ârestoring the tracks and Henryâs adding and playing on them again such as could be done! Thanks to Dave Russell, on Maui, who was engineer for George Bensonâs Lahaina Sounds studio the Walter Breckerâs up country Maui studio, and now his own, Dave Russellâs recording, he brought back the music tracks and brought out the sound with todayâs technology!
Yes the music is back in place with the sounds of today, several cuts are âtimelessâ classics, and a new feel of class, âA Time For Loveâ is now, and âStep Into My Lifeâ is today! The CD is dedicated to Herb Ono, who believed in me all the way! Mahalo, Herb!
