In the summer of 2010, composer and creative trumpet artist Daniel Rosenboom conceived a suite of music for progressive jazz septet, exploring the nature of self-discovery through introspection. Enlisting the expertise of some of Los Angelesâs most innovative musicians, Rosenboom created the Daniel Rosenboom Septet to record âFallen Angelesâ in June of 2010.

The album opens with âIdeology,â an exploration of the absurdity of rigid ideals. Through manic breakbeats, free-wheeling improvisation, quick transitions, numerology and stylistic caricature, âIdeologyâ shakes the ears to attention with vigor and humor! Next, the albumâs title track âFallen Angelesâ is a brooding reflection on the underbelly of Rosenboomâs home city, Los Angeles. Using serialist techniques, he builds tension and texture and employs the bass clarinet wizardry of Brian Walsh to wail the ails of the disenfranchised citizens of the City of Angels.

The centerpiece of this album is a five-movement suite, conceived in a dream and focused on the process of meditative self-discovery. âMeditationâ opens the suite with a focal point â a single note, B, which gradually expands in to a swirling world of woodwind texture, from which emerges the beautiful and haunting alto flute of Vinny Golia. Building into a surging climax, âMeditationâ culminates with the same focal point but elevated and energized, poised to dive into âConfrontation.â The moment of confrontation between conscious and subconscious is punctuated with bashing blows, blazing beats, and frenzied horns as Gavin Templetonâs ripping alto sax and Rosenboomâs raging trumpet do battle. This tense confrontation descends into âFury,â as we deal with the innermost rumblings of rage with ogre-like bass lines and oppressively beautiful horn melodies. Vinny Goliaâs bellowing tubax churns toward revelation and segues into Rosenboomâs trumpet, surging toward charged catharsis. âTransformationâ occurs as Sam Minaieâs mysterious bass lures us into dreamlike piano waterfalls, misty train-track drums, and foggy flutes with overtones of Ellington ringing in the air. Brian Walshâs bass clarinet soars through the scene and, with a wisp of cymbal, fades into the fog. As we emerge transformed, a heartfelt piano chorale played by Rosenboomâs father, David, leads into âElation,â and Caleb Dolisterâs racing, heart-palpitating drum grooves whip the band into a whirlwind of joyous realization.

âEspionageâ brings us back to gritty reality with a rocking groove, sly horn lines and the sheer alto sax virtuosity of Gavin Templeton. Finally, the album closes with an intimate love song, written in a moment of inspiration upon just before parting ways - âWhile She Slept.â
