Big Moths avant garde style is one of anarchy and desolation, no rules, no dilemmas, no processes nothing that should be adhered to. The emotional involvement at times appears to overtake the music, it is not always easy to discover the direction the music is taking or even where the connection with the person, the instrument, or the soundscape itself is.
The music is autobiographical at the moment of writing, itâs creation is what Big Moth is feeling, living at a particular point in time. When Big Moth moves forward so does the music, so do the towering walls of sound, the quiet passages, ever shifting from one direction to another, but always in motion.
There must always be an intensity in the music, a feeling that this could take you anywhere, you would like to stop and breath but you are not allowed. There is no shrinking from what lies ahead, from what sounds or emotions must will their way into your picture, on and on, until the piece ends.
The dilemma of production versus letting chaos reign is always present and it is necessary that Big Moth music should not be halted in mid process, denied its focus or direction, the outcome is as much a mystery at times to Big Moth as it should be to the listener.
The music does not condemn, does not pull you apart does not leave you desolate, unless of course it does and maybe then that is not a bad thing, the experience perhaps, is now complete.
There is melody somewhere, but where? a reason to what is happening if you look for it, the music appears to ignite as opposed to being composed, it is left to take its own direction, its own path as if living in itâs own disjointed world, existing isolated with the listener a passerby.
The search for authenticity and the freedom this brings is what Big Moth are striving for. Not an easy task, not always achieved and the end result at times can be frustratingly hard to realise and not an easy listen but hopefully an emotional experience, one that has been a little dangerous, a little different, a crossing from one dimension into another, a place for the wary to rest their ears for just awhile.
