I was first introduced to Bassline Entertainment last year with their critically-acclaimed CD âState of Emergencyâ and I knew then that these kids had something special. This Wilmington, DE collective, described as The Fugees + City High + Wu-Tang + Arrested Development + Public Enemy is for real and are here to show that they are not a flash in the pan with their soon-to-be- released effort âElevator Music.â In the past couple of years, they have traveled the world with many marquee artists and the maturity is reflected in the lyrics and sound. They grab your ear with the bouncy âOff the Wallâ track then, hit you with the fun, but poignant, âY Canât I?â which expresses the frustrations of many young teens on the dating scene. The ladies anthem âWomenâ will have throngs of the fairer sex puttin their lighters up while the hot, jazzy beat and smooth vocals of âAlwaysâ will have you feeling mad mellow. The title track lets them dig a little deeper as they explore the ills of the industry, especially on the hip-hop side where they point out how many of todayâs rap stars have no clue about the history of their genre. Other hot joints include the blazinâ âAcross the Seas,â âGo to Workâ and the remix of âDriven,â that benefits from a âJackinâ 4 Beatsâ style production. Overall, I really like how a group of young men and women this large can come together and forge a sound that is equal parts entertainment and social consciousness. If theyâre in your area, definitely go check them out. Until then, be on the lookout for this CD and snatch it up when it hits the shelves.
