Although Billy Higgins is known for being the most recorded drummer in the history of jazz music.His most enduring legacy will be the effect his spirit has had on the many artists and people that knew him.Billy believed in the power of music and shared his gift with the universe.I first got to know him through his many famous recordings.I was still in junior high school when I discovered "Search For a New Land" and " Corn Bread" which featured trumpeter Lee Morgan.It would be many decades later that our paths would cross and I would get the opertunity to meet him in the flesh.I am probably one of the last of a generation that actualy grew up listening to jazz.
Jazz muscians were my heros so as soon as I got the opertunity I saved my money and went to New York to produce my first jazz record.The history of jazz is basicaly a history of life in America and a people rebelling against rascism,commercialism,and ignorance.Jazz muscians seemed to have a religion all there own and didn't aspire to be so called successful.The idea was to create art.Something more important than the individual. If I represented the last of a generation of listeners then Billy in my openion represented the last of the jazz faithful.He believed in it and lived it.Billy believed in what jazz could do and went about trying to save the world through his drumming.I had produced several recordings before serving as producer on "43rd.& Degnan".It would be the first of several that I had the opertunity to produce with the great drummer.If God had said pick anybody in the world and produce a record with any band in the universe.It would have been an easy decision for me.I of course would choose Billy and the young and gifted Black Note whose avarage age at the time of this recording is 16 years.Although the band went on to record for Columbia and other major labels what was captured here is unique and can never be duplicated.
